Virginia Commonwealth University Spring Course Schedule

Workshop in Education:  Developing Student Leadership I

Endorsed by The Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals

This graduate level course (3 hrs)--developed by VASSP and VCU--is designed to prepare beginning and experienced teachers to extend the middle level and high school curriculum into the domain of student leadership through co-curricular activity advising.  A practical overview of theories, policies and practices necessary for the development and instruction of student leadership and co-curricular activities will be presented. Topics include the essential components of professional planning, organizational management, interpersonal skills, resource management, ethics and leadership.   Participants in this course will learn to identify potential student leaders and maximize the leadership capacity and life skills development in these students through meaningful, experiential, and service oriented activities.

School principals have long recognized that effective student leadership programs are an essential component of a well administered school and a critical aspect of student development.   The Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals has worked with VCU to develop this program and a certification process to identify and recognize teachers who have completed training in student leadership and co-curricular activity advising.
